Writing is notoriously hard – both to learn and to teach. There is so much involved beyond the expected “punctuation, handwriting and spelling”.
This group of short courses, featuring guest appearances from Stephen Parsons and Ali Neale, offers a fresh, holistic, evidence-informed and practical approach to supporting learners who struggle with writing, whatever their barriers. We’ll begin by exploring the different barriers that can sit beneath writing difficulties, and how to identify what is really getting in the way. Each session will then focus on a different aspect of writing, with practical strategies to reduce specific challenges with writing. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of why writing can be so difficult, alongside practical ideas and strategies you can use straight away to enable your learners to write with greater confidence.
Part three – Plan, what plan?
The role of planning, self-regulation and metacognition in writing.
Writing is far more than putting words on a page. It relies on executive function to plan, organise, prioritise, monitor, adapt and regulate thinking throughout the writing process. In this session, we’ll explore why these skills can be particularly challenging for neurodivergent learners, the vital role of metacognition and self-regulation, and practical ways to develop it. We’ll also look at how teaching learners to write with the reader in mind can transform both the quality and purpose of their writing.
